Fixed Price to Solo Scheme
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I start any time?
Yes, as soon as you enrol, and buy the course, you can start straight away, whatever time of year.
You then have a full twelve months to take advantage of the Fixed Price to Solo training
What happens if I don't go solo in the twelve months?
Learning to fly and going solo within twelve months is realistic.
Weather is always a factor when flying gliders but a much greater factor is the time and effort you put into it. Essentially you control your success.
If you don't achieve the standard for solo in the twelve months period you will be able to assess the best way forward, for yourself, from a number of options, with the help and guidance of your Instructors.
What happens if I go solo earlier, say in six months?
You will have achieved your objective and the scheme comes to a successful end. You will continue to have full membership of the Club and will be able to continue your flying and development as a pilot enjoying the use of all the club facilities and instruction, paying for the launches and flying you choose to do just like all the other Club members do.
Do I need to take a Medical?
When you are coming towards the stage when you are being considered for going solo you will be asked to get your GP to confirm you are fit to drive a car and give you a medical certificate to prove it.
If you have any concerns about your health it would make more sense for you to seek the reassurance of a visit to your GP before committing to the Fixed Price to Solo training.
Are there any height or weight restrictions?
Yes there are for some practical reasons.
Being 17 stones or over will make the glider exceed its design limits, and therefore be a limiting factor.
Fitting in the cockpit you need to be able to reach the rudder pedals. They are easily adjustable and this is rarely a problem.
Being very tall means your headroom under the canopy is limited. Being 6ft 2ins or 6ft 3ins shouldn't be a problem. You would be welcome to come and try the gliders for size in the hangar prior to committing.
What about my age?
In the UK glider pilots can go solo when they are 16 years old!
You can start your training at any age but it would hardly be sensible for you to join if you were not yet past your fifteenth birthday.
Am I too old?
We have taught people to fly in their seventies and even eighties. Wise people know it takes longer to learn the older you are.
If you feel up to the challenge - go for it.
Once I've gone solo, what will it cost me to keep flying?
Probably less than you think; comparable to many other sports. For details see our club rates.
