Location
We are located at Rufforth Airfield, just west of the cathedral city of York; this is an ideal location for soaring both in thermal and in the Pennine wave.
If you plan to visit by road you may find the following directions helpful:
The exact location of the airfield is approximately 4 miles west of York city centre, between the villages of Rufforth and Askham Richard.
From the south and south east:
Visitors coming up from the south on the A19 or A1079 will join the
A64 to the east of the club. Turn left on the A64 in the Leeds
direction and continue past the racecourse. You will eventually see a
wooden anti-dazzle fence on your left; just after this finishes you
will see an exit signposted to the A1237. Follow the slip road round
over the A64 till you come to a roundabout then take the first exit,
signposted Askham Bryan. The second left turn (after the Agricultural
College) is signposted to Askham Richard. Take that and continue
until you see a road to the right, which is signposted the Gliding
Centre. This will take you through Askham Richard. Further signs to
the club will indicate another right turn after the village, and
finally a right turn through the airfield gate.
From the north:
From the Thirsk or Harrogate directions, turn right onto the
A1237. Leave it by turning right towards Wetherby on the B1224. Resist
any temptation to turn left towards the airfield before reaching the
edge of Rufforth village; the gliding club entrance is on the west,
not the north side. The correct turning is into a road just into the
village, after the shop and before the Tankard pub. This road will
take you past the club entrance.
From the west (B1224 Wetherby road):
From the Wetherby direction, continue in the York direction through
Rufforth village. Just before leaving the village you will pass a pub
called the Tankard on your left, with a turning off to the right just
before the village shop. Take that turning and continue till you
reach the airfield entrance.
From the west (A64 Leeds road):
From the Leeds direction, take a turning to the left, signposted to
the Gliding Centre, by a pub called the Buckles. A left at the T-junction
at the end followed by an immediate right will take you through Askham
Richard- the turn to the right after the village and turn into the
airfield are clearly signed.
