Annual Dinner- tickets now available

The club's annual dinner will be held at the same Poppleton venue as last year, on March 3rd.

Tickets are now available from the office- price £28.

Midweek flying

Mark Boyle has offered to coordinate flying on days other than the standard Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday, by sending out e-mails saying when he or other instructors or tug pilots will be available. Rather than e-mail every member of the club, including those not interested, it will be an opt-in system- if you want to be e-mailed about midweek flying, send an e-mail to flydays@yorkglidingcentre.co.uk- this will be forwarded automatically to Mark who will put you on the list.

How about this then?

John Learoyd sent in this photo taken in Bradford on Thursday Dec 22nd.

Wednesday duty list

You may have noticed that the duty list now includes rostered duty instructors and tug pilots for Wednesdays- so you can turn up confident there will be cover.

Happy Birthday Jack

Jack Hargreaves celebrated his 16th birthday and first opportunity to fly solo on December 20th. Here he is after the event, with instructor Colin Richardson.

Photo of the moment

Following the winter custom of showing holiday pics from down under, Karen Usher has just got , and when there sent in this photo of a glider hanging from the ceiling in the arrivals hall at Queenstown airport in New Zealand. She says there's no indication of what it is or why it's there, and the web was no help.

I thought it was a Grunau Baby, but other members have correctly identified it as a Slingsby Prefect, probably a full-size replica or rebuild. See postings in the forum.

AGM

The club AGM took place on Nov. 20th. Some highlights for those of you who missed it:

Paul Hepworth took his final bow as treasurer, following many years of dedicated service. Dave Wakefield was elected unopposed as his successor. Richard Brisbourne and Pam Shuttleworth remained in place as chairman and secretary without the need for an election. There was an election for the three remaining committee members; Keith Batty chose not to stand again, and after recounts, a tie, and a revote we finished up with Terry Newby and Pete Arthur being joined by Mark Boyle.

Parking of powered aircraft on site as a means of raising additional revenue was abandoned as a non-starter after the result of a detailed look at the tax implications was reported.

The committee received a mandate to increase subscriptions by more than inflation for next year.

Keith Proctor was elected to the Scrutiny Panel replacing Dave Wakefield.

Discussion of club policy on credit led to a clear consensus that a tougher line on slow payers would be perfectly acceptable.

The membership was not in favour of a proposal to make committee meetings open.

Following the meeting the elected members met and confirmed the appointment of Alan Wrigley as the new CFI, following Mark Boyle's retirement.

Launch point bus

Mark Boyle and team have done an excellent job on the old bus we acquired from Dishforth. Not only do we have fresh paint and a gas ring for cups of tea, but most novel of all, upholstered armchairs at the launch point. Enjoy!

50th Anniversary celebration

As most of you reading this will know (because you were there) this was an enormous success. Around a hundred people attended for meal, disco, and most important, the chance to meet old friends and socialise with members past and present. Many thanks to Carol and the team for a job well done.

A montage of some of the photographs sent in by Michael Foote and Mark Lench (liberally cropped by me) is here. You can now also view all the photos they sent in (uncut) by clicking on the "Slideshow" link on that page.

Wave flying and mode S- latest

Many thanks to all who sent in details of their wave flights. The latest situation is that the BGA are putting in proposals for additional areas in the UK where non-transponder gliders will be permitted above 10000 ft, as part of the consultation process. The chairmen of Burn, Sutton Bank and Rufforth have met, along with Eden Soaring to review where the wave climbs are being done and put in a claim (Pocklington were invited but didn't show).

We have requested an area covering the Vale and Pennines down to the M62 and extending into Eden Soaring's wave area to the west (obviously excluding controlled airspace already closed to us.

Note, if even we do get a further derogation it will only be until 2015, when we will have to go through the process again, so please keep recording those flights, and put them on the National Ladder.
